SPIRITUAL VALUES

DANGER OF REJECTION TE KARAKA SERVICE (Herald Correspondent.) In a breif but forceful address at the Waikohu County observance of Anzac Day in Te Karaka yesterday the Rev P. H Blakiston, late chaplain to the forces, declared that unless the lessons of the past world wars were taken to , heart another and more dreadful cataclysm must befall the nations. After pointing out how moral and spiritual development had fallen behind development in material things throughout the world, Mr Blakiston stated that Anzac Day originally was commemorative of those who had fallen in a “war to end wars” in 1914-18. The nations had let down the war dead by rejecting spiritual values; and they would let down the men who had sacrificed their lives in the more recent war if they did not implement the ideal inherent in the United Nations. This ideal could be implemented only by introducing into individual lives Cod’s principles of truth, mercy, righteousness and honour. If people failed in this the youth of yet another generation would be thrown away in a more terrible conflict than any that had gone before. The Waikohu service was held indoors owing to heavy rain, and was preceded by. a parade of ex-service personnel, the Te Karaka Company of the , Boys’ Brigade, Girl Guides and ' Brownies, which marched to the Waikohu Hall led by the Gisborne Pipe Band under Pipe-Major D. Miller. The service in the hall was conducted by the Rev. I. B. McLean, Ormond. Miss Lena Ruru provided accompaniment for the hymns. At the conclusion of the service PipeMajor Miller played a lament, and the Benediction was pronounced by Mr Blakiston. A collection taken up during the service a handsome contribution to the Gisborne R.S.A. food-for-Britain fund.
