Heavy Rain at Opotiki Following particularly heavy rain last Sunday, Opotiki residents are hopeful that the fresh in the two rivers in the district will have the effect of washing a new channel through the bar at'the mouth, which has been very shallow following the storm three weeks ago. It is now over six weeks, since a cargo boat entered Opotiki harbour. One of the heaviest thunderstorms for years struck Opotiki just before midday last Sunday. During the week end 5.50 in of rain was recorded in Opotiki, 4in of (his falling on Sunday. Dickens Gathering At Mrs. E. Hampton’s home, Derby street, a meeting of the Dickens Club was held last Monday, the president, Mrs. A. Scott, presiding over an excellent attendance. She welcomed dub members and a visitor. Miss Merle Cochrane. Auckland, and gave an interesting address on Dickens. Readings from the Dickens novel, . “Great Expectations” v/ere given by Mesdames Earle Hampton. F. R. Hill and V. Clement. and tea was served by the hostess, Mrs. Simmonds, assisted by Mrs. Hampton, concluding a most enjoyable meeting. Speedy Air Trip When she left Gisborne yesterday morning by air, Mrs G. E. Emms hoped to be in Tasmania to-morrow afternoon after a continuous air trip. Mrs Emms’ father died on Thursday and last-min-ute arrangements were made by the National Airways Corporation to ensure her arrival in Bonsana, Montagu Bay, Hobart, at the earliest possible time. She caught a Clipper at Auckland at 8 a.m. to-day and should arrive at Sydney this evening. She will go on to Melbourne to-morrow morning and from there catch another ’plane for the last three-hour trip to Hobart. Mrs Emms will return to Gisborne as soon as a return passage is available after she has assisted her mother in attending to her deceased father’s affairs.
