NEWCASTLE TROUBLE
PROTEST STRIKES LIKELY CLOSURE BY BUTCHERS (9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 29. Protest strikes against the absence of meat seem inevitable in several Newcastle industries. The feeling has hardened since the Prime Minister, Mr. J. B. Chifley, told a deputation that Newcastle butchers who are keeping shops closed will have to fall into line with those of Sydney who have been open for a week after the concerted closure.
Newcastle butchers are holding out for a subsidy payment by the Government so that the retail prices of meat should remain unaltered.
