RELIEF FROM HEAT RECORD AT WAIKANAE Yesterday's heat, with a record temperature of 90.5 degrees, drove Gisborne residents to the beaches and no fewer than 722 patrons used the facilities of the Waikanae Beach Improvement Society, creating a record for the season. When the shops and offices closed there was a fresh surge to the beach and 150 passed through the sheds at Waikanae. Bathing continued until 9 p.m
It was the first really hot day experienced in Gisborne this summer, and because of that the returns for the bathing facilities have not kept abreast of the takings of recent years. However. with a few more days like yesterday, the caretaker, Mr. H. R. Brown, expects to be able to show an increase. There were 50 bathers before 10 a.m. to-day.
The holiday motor camp at the beach has continued to attract patronage and many visitors to the district continue to pitch their tents or halt their caravans on the society’s camp sites. Last weekend there were 130 sites occupied and to-day that figure had been reduced to 110. 'Although the majority of the holiday-makers have returned to work, a number of others are now enjoying their annual vacations and have included Gisborne in their itineraries.
