YOUNG MAN DROWNED
SOUTHLAND FATALITY SWIM TO RIVER ISLAND (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29. Mr. Victor James Goodsir, 21, dairy factory assistant, lost his life in a drowning accident at Fairfax on Monday afternoon. With two friends, Messrs. Alan and Robert Taylor, Mr. Goodsir went swimming just below the Fairfax bridge. He swam to an island where he rested before beginning the return journey. He was on the way back, swimming in about Bft. of water, when he got into difficulties.
His friends went to his aid, but were unable to get him out and had difficulty in regaining the shore themselves. Peter Ritchie dived and recovered the body. Artificial respiration was tried without success.
