STRUCK BY TRAIN
ELDERLY MAN KILLED CHILD SUFFERS INJURIES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Dec. 11. A collision between a train and a car occurred on the Northbrook road crossing, Rangiora, about 3.30 p.m. yesterday, resulting in a man being killea and a boy injured. The victims were: KILLED. Mr. Francis Forester Jackson, aged 09. widower, East Belt, Rangiora. INJURED. Charles F. Leech, aged six years, head injuries, condition serious. Mr. Jackson, who was a retired blacksmith, had gone to meet his grandson, Charles Leech, a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Leech, Camside, and Mary Jane Bennett, aged 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs J. B. Bennett, Camside. to take them home in his car to avoid the rain. He met the children after school and placed the boy next to himself with the girl on the outside front seat. He also took on board the bicycles on which the children had ridden to school.
A goods train proceeding towards Rangiora from South Brook struck the car, which was travelling east, and car. ried it across a cattle stop before throwing it to one side of the line, Mr. Jackson died immediately and the boy. who was in a dazed condition, was sent to the Christchurch Hospital. The girl was able to go to her home, apparently uninjured.
