BRITISH COAL CUTS
INDUSTRIES AFFECTED WINTER DEFICIT FEARED (9 a.m.) LONDON. Dec. 7 Nearly 4,500 major industrial undertakings as well as hotels, restaurants and amusement places, will be affected by the compulsory fuel cuts, imposed by the Minister of Fuel, Mr. E. Shinwell.
Only the iron and steel industry coke ovens and railways are exempted. No compulsory restrictions are proposed for domestic consumers but the Minister made a further appeal to them. It was essential, he said, par. ticularly that they should use less electricity, otherwise people would be thrown out of work and industry dislocated.
Explaining the need for cuts, Mr. Shinwell, at a press conference, said the total weekly coal output was 4.4 per cent higher than a year ago and having regard to. the decline in manpower. this must be considered satisfactory but the consumption had alsc gone up and was now 6.7 per cent higher than a year ago, The supplies this winter might fall short of total icquirements by between 2,000,000 and 5,000,000 tons.
