LORD MONTGOMERY
VISIT NEXT JULY AUSTRALIA AND N.Z. (10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. Field Marshal Lord Montgomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, has announced that he will arrive in Australia on July V 1947, for a fortnight’s tour of troops and military installations* and will afterwards spend a fortnight in New Zealand. Lord Montgomery arrived at Udine, Italy, to-day and was met by the British officer commanding Allied troops in the Venezia Giulia area, Lieut.-General Sir John Harding. All roads between Udine and Duino were blocked an hour before Field Marshal Montgomery’s arrival. A request was made to correspondents not to speculate whether Field Marshal Montgomery's visit to the Italian area would extend beyond Venezia Giulia or its duration. Field Marshal Montgomery will make a courtesy call on the United States Eighty-Eighth Division. He will in-, spect and address the British troops and confer with their officers.
Field Marshal Lord Montgomery, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, who yesterday received honorary degrees at Athens University, in a speech warned the Greeks against the folly of internal strife, says the Daily Telegraph’s correspondent in Athens. In ancient days, he said, the period of Greece’s greatness was short owing to continued feuds between powerful factions. He advised them to profit from the lessons of the past.
