EXTENSION OF STRIKE
RAND GOLD MINES STATE MAY INTERVENE CAPE TOWN, March 22. The Rand gold miners’ strike has spread to eight more mines. The Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts, told the South African Assembly that 8500 men are affected.
The Secretary for Labour. Mr. F. L. Buchanan, and General Smuts’ personal adviser, Mr. Ivan Walker, are being sent to Witwatersrnnd to consult both sides and advise the Government on steps to end the strike. General Smuts declared it was possible that drastic steps would have to be taken and, if necessary in the national interests, would be taken. The Mineworkers’ Executive unanimously agreed to the Government’s proposal for a judicial inquiry into their union’s affairs, and also the present stoppage.
