MR. THOMAS BROUGHTON
Mr. Thomas Broughton, Taradale, who died at the Napier Hospital on Sunday following a lengthy period of ill-health, was a descendant of one of Hawke’s Bay’s best-known Maori families. A son of the late Mr. Wi Broughton. a noted leader of the Maori race, he was a member of the Kahungunu tribe.
Born at Gisborne 56 years ago, he spent his whole life in the Hawke’s Bay district. In the First World War he enlisted at the outbreak and served with the First Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces, being one of the first to land on Gallipoli. Afterwards he served with the Australians in France, where he was subsequently transferred to the Maori battalion, with whom he served to the end of the war. He was married in England. He is survived by his wife and an only son, Mr. Joseph Broughton, who served for a long period in the recent war.
