Fewer American cigarettes are being smoked in Auckland to-day than at any time since June, 1942, when the first big contingent of friendly Americans arrived with their arms full of United States cigarettes in cartons. For a year, at least, thousands of people smoked American cigarettes received as gifts. Then the black market developed. For the past 12 months it has been a big market. Now it is diminishing. The ceiling price is now 25s per carton of 200. but few cartons are offering. Mostly the cigarettes are offered in packets of 20 as prizes m shilling raffles, and the winners will seldom sell.
