NEW U.S. MINISTER

WELLINGTON WELCOME TRIBUTE TO NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON. March 6 A civic reception to Mr. Avra M. Warren, envoy extraordinary and Minister plenipotentiary of the United States, and Mrs. Warren was given by the Mayor, Mr. W. Appleton, in Wellington yesterday The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. B. Roberts represented the Government. Special greetings were extended by Mr. Warren to New Zealand from General Patrick J. Hurley and General Vandergrif, now commanding the Marine Corps, who had paid glowing tributes to the hospitality and co-oDern-tion received from the people of the Dominion in the dark days of 1943. New Zealand, said Mr. Warren, could be proud not only of her contribution of men, food and supplies, but of the outstanding part taken in the establishment of die new world order. No one could fail to admire the constructive activities of the New Zealand representatives at the San Francisco conference and in London. “The United Nations has got off to a good start,” he said. ‘‘That does not mean that it is assured of success. The United Nations’ charter will work if the people are determined to make it work.” The task of achieving mutual understanding between New Zealand and the United States was no grave problem, added Mr. Warren. Sharing common ideals of democracy and justice, the two nations were able to contribute mightily to the realisation of the ideal of world peace.
