NGATAPA SPORTS
SETTLERS’ SUPPORT Though owing to the dry weather and the consequent shortage of horses in training there was a considerable drop in the number of horse entries at the annual sports meeting of the Ngatapa Patriotic Sports Club, the fixture was nevertheless well attended and spectators enjoyed a thoroughly satisfactory outing on Saturday afternoon. The 25 events on the programme were completed in good time, and the club was able to show a surplus on the meeting ' which will more than cover fhe area's contribution to the welfare fund of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council.
Horse events, apart from pony and children's riding classes, were judged by Mr. A. W. Mossman. and ponies and children's classes by Mr. B. R. U. Burke, both judges giving every satisfaction to competitors and spectators. The open cup for the competitor gaining most points in all events was won this year by E. McHugh, and the local competitors’ aggregate cup by L. C. Wagner, who also won the cup for the local jump. A tie between lan Mclldowie, G. Hansen and M. Matthews was recorded in respect of the children’s aggregate trophy, Matthews being declared the winner on a ballot being taken.
Rain fell late in the afternoon, and so far from discomfiting patrons of the meeting it seemed to add to their satisfaction. Results:— Whip ami Bottlo (20 entries): K. McHugh, 1 ami *2; Calder, a.
