AURORA AUSTRALIS
DISPLAYS POSSIBLE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 4. There is a distinct probability that the Aurora Australis will be observed in several parts of New Zealand, particularly in the far south, as a result of renewed sunspot activity which has become apparent. The displays, if they eventuate, may be expected any night from to-morrow to March 8. The usual time for the Aurora is between !) p.m. and midnight, but a good display can last the greater part of the night. Cloudy conditions have made the observations of sunspots difficult to study and lias been possible only for brief intervals, but so far as can be seen there seems to be a great area of the sun which can only be described as “gathered.” The area of the original group consisted of two fairly large spots and so far as can be ascertained the leading one ha s disintegrated. It is likely that their reappearance will result in faulty radio reception, particularly of overseas broadcasts.
