"M.P.H.” Old-fashioned
One result of British turbo-jet development has been that R.A.F. squadron pilots are now flying aircraft with air-speed indicators calibrated in a percentage of the speed of sound, the ordinary miles-per-liour scale now having become old-fashioned and inadequate. The limiting factor which these pilots now have to bear in mind as they fly is no longer the endurance of their engines, but the “high-speed compressibility stall”—something which two years ago was unheard of outside a laboratory.
