SHARKS PREVALENT
FIVE SYDNEY BEACHES
MESHING IN USE AGAIN
(9 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 5. Large sharks drove bathers from the
water at five Sydney beaches on Sunday. Most of the sharks, sighted were between 12 and 15 feet long, bu.t, due to alert patrols, there were no casualties.
One surf beltman and a patient were hauled 250 yards to safety while a surfboat held a shark off.
The crew of another surfboat swamped in the breakers were rescued by tour bellmen, despite the presence of four sharks.
After a lapse of two years the shark meshing off the Sydney beaches will begin again to-morrow. In the course of six years 2800 sharks were caught and killed bv this method. The service is carried out by lauzicn under Government contract.
