U.S. ARMY IN GERMANY 3,000,000 GERMANS LIABLE WAR CRIME PENALTIES (11.30 a.m.) LONDON. March 4. A sweeping new law drafted by three German Ministers makes 3,000,000 Germans in the American zone liable to punishment for aiding Hitler, states the Associated Press’ correspondent in. Berlin.
lire punishment ranges from 10 vears in labour camps and confiscation of property for major offenders to special reparations and a fine for those classed a-’ followers.
Lieutenant-General Lucius Clay, deputy American military governor, said the Americans were determined to see the sentences were carried out. The Germans would do their own prosecuting.
As far as the Military Government could commit the United States, he added, the Americans would remain in Germany for at least 10 years. Further instructions would be issued to the German Ministers concerning persons held guilty of war crimes and conduct against “peace and humanity.”
