NON CO-OPERATION

FARMERS’ UNION PLAN REPORTS ON PROGRESS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 18. Reports on the progress of the farmers’ policy of non-co-operation with the Government were received at a long session of the action commitee of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The committee also held preliminary discussions on the extensive publicity campaign to set out .the vital part played by the primary industry in the welfare of .the country. This will involve the establishment of an economic and publicity department of the union.

Details of the union’s non-co-opera-tion plan were announced some weeks ago. They include the transfer of accounts from the Bank of New Zealand, the Savings Bank and other Government institutions. “We were very pleased with the reports received on the progress of our plan,” stated the Dominion president, Mr. W. W. Mulholland, at the conclusion of the committee’s long session. “These reports from many centres indicate that considerable progress is being made.” Asked if the Farmers’ Union would continue to meet the representatives of the Federation of Labour in conferences such as had been held in the past on the country’s economic stabilisation plan, Mr. Mulholland said that there had been no decision not to do so should the union be invited to such conferences. He said his recent attendance at the national conference of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union was at the invitation of the union. He had addressed the, members of the union at their request and had spoken in favour of closer relations between the farmers and the workers.
