FIRE IN WELLINGTON

TYRE STOCKS DAMAGED

OUTBREAK IN GARAGE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Extensive damage to tyres and rubber stocks was caused when a fire broke out in the premises of Fitzgerald Bros., garage proprietors, Wakefield street, Wellington, shortly after 2 o’clock yesterday morning. The outbreak originated near the roof above where the tyres were stacked.

When the fire engines—seven from the Central and one from the Thorndon stations —arrived the fire was well established in the front centre portion of the premises where the stocks of tyres were stored, the majority of which were beyond salvaging. After a lengthy battle the fire was brought under control. The offices were completely gutted. Yesterday the tyres and other stock were being sorted out, but it was impossible to estimate the damage. It was stated by a member of the firm that there was a considerable number of tyres stored in the premises. Some had been repaired and others were waiting. This would cause considerable inconvenience to those expecting to travel during the Christmas period.

Inquiries are being made by the police as .this is one of several fires which have occurred in city business premises over the past four weeks.
