WOOL FOR GREECE
APPEAL TO FARMERS
GIFTS URGENTLY NEEDED
An appeal to the farmers of the Gisborne district to donate wool to be sent to Greece for home-spinning into children's clothes is being made on behalf of the New Zealand Council of Organisation for Relief Overseas and UNRRA by Miss Jan Williams, Turihaua. Miss Williams said this morning that an effort was being made to get as many farmers as possible to donate one bale’ each, although smaller quantities also would be gratefully received. Farmers wishing to contribute were urged to notify their agents before the wool was appraised, and also herself. The wool would be sent to Wellington and would bo placed aboard the first ship loading for Greece. Miss Williams said she was receiving assistance from a number of ex-service-men who desired to show their appreciation of the help they were given by the Greeks during the grim, bitter battles against the Germans. Distressing appeals were still being received from UNRRA workers in Greece upon the seriousness of the situation, which is being accentuated by the approach of winter. “As to the most useful supplies,” stated one communication, “wool does seem to us most useful. . . There are various industries in the town, as well as in the country, which should be restarted as they would be a source of employment for girls. Any wool sent, therefore, would be of the utmost value. “It is quite noticeable how homespuns. for instance, have stood up to the wear and tear of the times, and howmuch better clad are those people who had homespun or woven clothing. The clothing question is very bad. and everything is a fantastic price. People ask for clothing before food.”
