SPANIARDS REPRIEVED

CADIZ DEATH SENTENCES (9 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 17

The death sentences imposed by a court-martial on five accused who were charged with subversive activities at Cadiz last week have been commuted to terms of life imprisonment, says The Times’ correspondent in Madrid. The Minister of Justice announced that General Franco had expressed the wish that as many prisoners as possible should be released before Christmas, whereupon the Cabinet decided to grant conditional liberty to 2500. The correspondent adds that some 70 Traditionalists who were arrested last week for resisting police intervention at a meeting in honour of the Carlist Regent, Prince Xavier de Bourbon Parma, are still in custody at Pamplona without trial.
