NOT FOUND OUT BY JAPS

INTERNEE’S REAL JOB SARAWAK OFFICIAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. Had the Japanese known of the real job of Mr. J. L. Noakes, formerly of Thames, he would not have emerged from some years of internment in their hands as unscathed as he now is. This was Mr. Noakes’ own impression, given in an interview yesterday on board the Andes, which brought back many ex-internces.

He was Secretary of Defence to the Government of Sarawak, but through all his long internment he was able to keep that fact secret from the Japanese.

“I managed to hide this particular job under the other appointments I held, otherwise they would have had a go at me," he said.

“As it was, X had to undergo several Gestapo examinations. “The Chief Secretary and head of the Government was taken away and “disappeared," said Mr. Noakes. The camn in which Mr. Noakes was held was situated at Kuching, Sarawak, and out of about 2000 people 650 were lost through ill-treatment, malnutrition, starvation and disease.
