STRONG MARKET

YOUNG SHEEP STORTFORD SALE BEEF LINES EASE (S.R.) HASTINGS, Oct. 25. A feature o£ yesterday’s store sheep sale at Stortford Lodge was the opening of the season for two-tooth wethers, of which there was over 3300 out of a total yarding of 11.000 head. The market for these young sheep, which were in good order off the shears, exceeded expectations. The sale was given a remarkable opening with the ottering oi the large draft of 1-150, which were sold at the high figure of 2Gs Gd. Other lines ranging from 530 to GOO made from 22s fid to 245, the latter line making better buying than the top-price draft. The first of Die season’s two-tooth ewes were also penned, the best being medium sheep only to make 24s t!d, others, mixed, making 22s lOd. Downcross two-tooths, well conditioned, off the shears, made 22s Id. Woolly sheep were cheaper to-day. The yarding included some of the best wether hoggets of the season, which brought from 30s to 31s 4d, others at 29s 3d, being better buying than a fortnight ago. Extra good quality ewe hoggets brought from 32s to 345. others at 30s favouring buyers. Fat and forward ewes o(T the shears brought 15s 3d. Medium-framed fat and forward wethers were cheaper at 34s 9d. Good-class ewes with early lambs were a margin cheaper at 18s. Cecf Values Easier

With an entry of 370 bead of beef, butchers had a wide selection of quality pens. It is probably 12 months since such a large entry of bullocks came forward, and the bulk of the 240 head of ox beef were well finished. A glut supply resulted in an easing of values on those which ruled at the last sale a fortnight ago, when butchers had to pay big prices to obtain two weeks’ supply. One line of 3G bullocks was brought un from Foxton. Heavy beasts were selling at 50s a 1001 b, with prime-finished lighter beef at 55s to GOs a 1001 b. Top price lor ox beef was £25 18s Gd for a big-framed Hereford bullock in prime order. Other heavy-finished bullocks brought £2l 8s Gd to £23 18s Gd, with lightergrown. but first-class finished beasts at £l9 8s Gd to £2O 13s Gd. and unfinished sorts down to £l7 16s. Prime-finished cows made £9 3.s Gd to £lO 18s Gd. and lighter sorts down to £7 10s Gd. Heifer beef was in short snpplv. heavy animals selling at £l2 18s Gd, and lighter-grown, well-fin-ished animals at £lO 13s and £lO 10s.
