“NOT PRACTICABLE”

PETROL FROM EGYPT TRANSPORT DIFFICULTIES (P.R.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 25. Even if it were possible to divert some of New Zealand’s primary produce to Egypt, the importation of motor spirits from that area would not be practicable under existing conditions because the transport of petrol from Egypt to New Zealand would occupy tankers for more than twice the time now involved in bringing petrol to New Zealand,” said the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Sullivan added that the petrol produced from sterling sources, including Egypt, was insufficient to meet the needs of the sterling areas and there was not sufficient tanker tonnage under the British flag to carry those needs.
