RACING TO CLIMAX

EVENTS IN REICH ARMY BREAKING UP? PEACE DEMONSTRATIONS (10 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 8. Events in Germany are racing to a climax more rapidly than •we dared to hope and so rapidly that we may be on the verge of momentous happenings, says the Daily Mail’s correspondent on the Western Front. Incidents here during the past five days, added to other information, lead to the belief that the German military machine is beginning to disintegrate. There have been dozens of incidents of Huns surrendering in groups. One whole unit, including a high-ranking officer, laid down its arms without a tight when its position certainly was not critical. Many say that the hopelessness of the situation put them beyond caring about reprisals against their families. Many more declared that Himmler and the Gestapo are no longer in a position to carry out reprisals. They believe that events inside Germany have gone beyond the Gestapo. Reports from Berne state that demonstrations calling for peace took place in Leipzig and Chemnitz yesterday following a raid by American heavy bombers. A Swiss correspondent says: “The German people have got used to many things in the past few years, and it is difficult to dislodge them.from their calm apathy or whatever else it may be called. They have lived through a bombing war such as the world has never seen before. Although they may not actually have starved up to recently, to eat well and to eat really enough have become mythical things—as rare as German fighter planes.”
