GAOL FOR DEFAULTER
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Jan. 8. “I don’t believe in conscription for overseas service. It is just the old press-gang methods brought up to date,” said Albert James Benfell, aged 30, painter and paperhanger, when charged in the Police Court with failing to report for military service and illegally changing his name. The police statement showed that Benfell was called in 1940 after his appeal had been dismissed and he failed to report, A warrant was issued in 1942, but it was not until last Friday that he was located at Herior working under the name of While. He was sentenced to a total of four months’ imprisonment and subsequent detention in camp for the duration of the war.
