Justice's Outspoken Comment
"To say that it shows a shocking slate oT affairs is an under-statement," stated Mr. T. lcC. Powdrell, J.P.. in the Wairoa Police Court on Thursday referring to evidence heard against four Maoris who were each charged with unlawful carnal knowledge. "It show;-, a very big moral slide in the character of’the Maori people, one of I lie finest races in the world," he added. "We are very sorry to see this sordid affair and hope that all Maori parents, not only in this district, hut everywhere. will exercise greater parental control and guidance over their children. The evidence discloses that, these children were allowed out at all hours of the night with anyone and everyone. If (his sort, of thing is allowed to go on, the good name of (he Maori race is going to he rapidly east into disrepute and shame, and they will he looked upon with disgust by ' the pakeha instead of being respected. as they have been for so many years." Sergeant. W. I!. Miller, who conducted the prosecutions, expressed thanks to the Bench for its comment,
