NEW DIRECTORY

GISBORNE ’PHONES ISSUE IN FEBRUARY A new Gisborne telephone directory is due to be published on February 1. it was stated at the Chief Post Office this morning. Entries .for' names to be included in the book closed at the end of November and the publication is now in the hands of the printer. The directory will contain the names of 3034 subscribers, an increase of 245 since the beginning of last April. There are approximately 2700 in the current book, which was issued in February of last year. The list then compiled took the place of the one prepared in March, 1941. when the change-over to the automatic exchange'was made. At that time there were 2000 numbers. It was explained that the issue of a new directory only 12 months after the previous one has been made possible by improved paper supplies. A further indication of this is the department’s request to business linns to revert to the use of envelopes instead of the simple sticker that has been fairly widely adopted. The connection of a greater number of telephone subscribers is also the result of necessary materials becoming available. It is pointed out. however, that there are a number of people ' still waiting for services Which cannot be provided until the shortage of cable accommodation has been overcome.
