EROSION CONTROL

damage TO reserve WAERENGA-O-KURI SITE The Gisborne Borough Council is to be amoai'. the earliest applicants in this district for aid under the So:l Conservation and Rivers Control Act. which permits a catchment board to undertake or to subsidise work required to reduce damage done by the natural flow of water. The council last night approved a recommendation from its reserves committee that the aid of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council be sought to deal with erosion in the tree-planting reserve at Wacrenga-o-kuri.

The report of the committee on a meeting with a deputation of the Cook County _ Council and tlm Waerenga-o-kuri settlors was adopted, as under: —

“The committee met representatives of the Cook . County Council and settlers in the Waerenga-o-kuri district at the Waerenga-o-kuri Hall to discuss the cause of and remedy for the erosion which is taking place on the council’s reserve at Wacrenga-o-kiiri. “The position was discussed at considerable length by the various settlers, in the district, who strongly opposed any suggestion of diverting the flood-waters, which now flow through the council’s property towards Gisborne, down the creek flowin" towards Wairoa. “The settlers pointed out. that thenrespective properties are subjected to considerable Hooding from waters which have a natural fall towards Wairoa. and any additional water would result in serious damage to their properties. "The district engineer, Mr. E. »v. McEnnis. who was also in attenci - ance, pointed out that the scene of the erosion was in the proposed Poverty Bay catchment district, which would be* administered by a catchment board to be set up to deal wit.i all matters relating to soil conservation and rivers control m the ■Onborne district, and suggested that In-' Borough Council, as. the owners o' the property on which ’The erosion was taking place, should make. appncation through his office for. the advice of technical experts associated with the parent body—the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council —on the best means of dealing with tim problem. “The meeting agreed with the district engineer’s suggestion and the committee made a recommendation accordingly.”
