PRIVATE ENTERPRISE
“There is no reason why private enterprise should adopt a defeatist attitude as a result of war controls,” said Mr. J. F. Johnston, retiring president, at the annual meeting in Auckland of the Bureau of Importers. Importers and others, however, had the right to assure themselves that any new controls introduced were due to the exigencies of war and were not political. “We all know that there is no substitute for private enterprise,” added Mr. Johnston, “and much of our post-war prosperity will depend on the expansion of private enterprise to create that increase in our national wealth that alone can compensate for the loss and destruction caused by war.”
