AMERICAN SHIPYARDS 66 VESSELS IN JUNE OUTPUT BELOW SINKINGS (9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July ! Captain H. L. Vickery, vice-chairman of the Maritime Commission, announced that America’s shipyards had established a new- world record, in June by placing 66 ships, totalling 732,000 tons, in service, compared with the output in May of 58 ships, aggregating 632,304 tons. -, . A Captain Vickery said that President Roosevelt’s goal of 18,000,000 tons would be reached provided the steel is available. The 66 ships delivered in June brought a total for six months, to 228 ships, totalling 2,254,000 tons, y The June deliveries include 51 Liberty ships, seven cargo vessels. for Britain, five large tankers, two standard C2 and one standard C 3. In June the average time from the laying "• of a keel to delivery was 119 days. Captain Vickery predicted that the average goal of 105 days, originally expected in September, would be reached in July. He said that the American merchant marine was becoming larger, with more Ships delivered than were being,sunk. For all the United Nations, however, the production did not equal the sinkings. Captain Vickery criticised vessels of the Sea Otter type which, he said, required 250 per cent more steel than Liberty ships. One Liberty vessel could carry as much as eight Sea Otters.
