JAPANESE AT HANKOW OFFENSIVE BY ENEMY , BIG BATTLES RAGING • (By Telegraph—Press AssnT-Copyright.) , (1D.30 a.m.) CHUNGKING, July 2, Large formations of Chinese bombers attacked Japanese military installations in the Hankow area, and also at Yochow, in northern Hunan. Both are vital points on the Yangtse River. The China Central News reported that this marked the second attack ii> nine days on Hankow. A Chinese Army communique states: “On the Kiangsi front, enemy troops at Kweiki began attacking eastwards along the railway and penetrated to Iyang. Another enemy detachment had been halted at Maanshan and Tunghu. The Japanese; after crossing the Sin River, entered Yukiang, northwestward of Kweiki. The enemy’s advance northward has been checked. The enemy concentrated 30,000 troops in a counter-attack in the Linchwan sector. A column moving southward reached Tangfeng. A group from Nancheng advanced as far as Yenghingkaio. south-westward of Ihwang. There is sharp fighting at both places. “On the Shansi-Honan border, the Chinese abandoned Lingchwan. Fight-: ing is raging eastward and southward; Claims in Tokio “On the Chekiang front, enemy units attacking our positions from Pukiang and from Anhwashi joined forces. Both sides suffered heavy losses.-in.the ensuing fighting against Peitukang and Chientsun. . “On the Honan-Anhwei border Chinese forces attacked from several directions on Yngcheng. The Chinese occupied several positions southward. “On the Anwhei front, the Japanese attacked Chiteh from Tungliu gnd entered the city.
