The employment of men who are already accustomed to mountaineering and tramping in the formation of army units being trained for duty in rough country; has been urged on the army by the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand. As a result of the discussion and p resolution passed at the meeting of the federation in May, a sub-com-mittee communicated ‘ with the Minister of Defence, the Hori. F. Jones. Stewart, who is reported to have received a deputation sympathetically and a scheme is being evolved by which the skill of members of tramping and mountaineering clubs can be used in the defence of New Zealand, particularly an rough country.
