MOUNTAIN TROOPS
USE OF CLIMBERS URGED DEFENCE OF DOMINION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The employment of men who are already accustomed to mountaineering and tramping in the formation of army units being trained for duty in rough country; has been urged on the army by the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand. As a result of the discussion and p resolution passed at the meeting of the federation in May, a sub-com-mittee communicated ‘ with the Minister of Defence, the Hori. F. Jones. The Minister referred them to Brigadier K. L. Stewart, who is reported to have received a deputation sympathetically and a scheme is being evolved by which the skill of members of tramping and mountaineering clubs can be used in the defence of New Zealand, particularly an rough country. '
