CLOSING PROPOSED
SMALL BRITISH TRADERS COMPENSATION PLAN (3 p.m.) LONDON, June 29. The retail trade committee recommends the adoption of a scheme with the object of inducing small retail non-food traders to close down for the duration of the war instead of fighting a losing battle against diminishing trade. Compensation amounting to 5 per cent of the previous year’s turnover would be payable from a compulsory 1 per cent levy on turnover contributed by retailers electing to remain open. The compensation is intended primarily to relieve those closing down from contractual obligations. The committee suggests that those closing should be given prior rights of reentry into their trade after the war.
