HIGH LIVING COSTS
ACTION BY FARMERS A petition which is being circulated asking for a substantial increase in the guaranteed price for cheese led to a discussion at the North Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union on the high living costs of the farmer, and the feeling was made the subject of a motion adopted in lieu of supporting the petition. “If other sections of the community are being compensated for increased costs of living and rising costs of production, then,” the motion stated, “as primary producers we insist on equivalent treatment.” Attention was drawn by the promoters of the petition, the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union, to Ihe mounting costs of production within the industry, and it was emphasised that the Imperial Government was paying a higher price this year for exported cheese. This extra sum of 5s 9d (sterling) per cwt., it was contended. should be passed on to the suppliers of milk used in the manufacture of cheese.
