Beach Camp Facilities
Sir,—Permit me a little space to protest about the lack ot vision being shown by those responsible for the improvements and shortcomings of the Waikanae Beach camping grounds. I write as a regular local camper, and also as one who has seen most of the camps in the North Island. It is my opinion that our camp is up to the standard of any, in most respects, but it has the most inadequate hot-water supply of any camp worth mentioning in the North Island. Why will not those responsible realise the importance of this matter? I invite any of the committee to visit the cookhouse at frequent intervals, and just listen to the comments of visiting campers. The time is long past when motor campers are willing to rough it, and while other towns are providing such facilities Gisborne must do likewise. I also notice a lot of the past good work being spoilt by encroaching sand and many trees and shrubs dying for lack of attention. I do not know the exact state of the finances of the society, but I do know' that they have money in hand which should be spent in the right way, and a few pounds for upkeep will save many pounds in the years to come. I know there are dozens of local campers who entirely agree with the views expressed in this letter, and I think it.is up to the. committee to explain why it is necessary for us to lag so far behind ether towns, or better still, to immediately do something about it before anothc. holiday season passes by. PROGRESSIVE THOUGHT.
