SAFETY PATROLS

WORK AT THE SCHOOLS POSSIBLE LEGISLATION Speaking at meeting of Automobile Association members on the East Coast, Mr. H. W. Bullock, the vicepresident of the association, referred to the Automobile Association system of child safety patrols. This innovation, he said, was designed to protect the school children when crossing the road in front of the school and to impress on the young minds the vital necessity of never stepping out into a motor roadway without first stopping on the edge of the kerb and looking both ways to see if a motor car was coming. The association co-operates with headmasters and supplies free of charge, to every school which operates safety patrols, smart uniform coats and caps, arm and lapel badges, safety text books, and generally assists in the matter of instruction and supervision.

The speaker said that the Automobile Association was very proud of the fact that no child had been injured on the roadway outside a school where the safety patrol system was in operation. The association first inaugurated school safety patrols in the Auckland district nine years ago. At the school safety convention to be held in Auckland in December it was expected that 500 safety patrols would attend.

That the value of the association’s work in regard to the safety of school children was receiving national recognition wase extremely gratifying and l was announced that the Governnent shortly would introduce regula.ions legalising school crossings and providing for the establishment of a Dominion-wide system of school safety patrols.
