U.S. DEFENCE WORK

SUPER CONTROL BOARD ARMY TERM EXTENDED (Reed. Aug. 20, 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 19. The United Press says that Congressional sources say that President Roosevelt is considering a major revision of defence management by putting the Vice-President, Mr. H. A. Wallace, as head of a new super agency combining the functions of the Office of Production Management and the Economic Defence Board, with both continuing to operate under the agency, thus raising Mr. Wallace’s status to that of “assistant President” and outranking Mr. W. S. Knudsen and Mr. S. Hillman in defence matters. It is understood that the new board will also include the Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, the Secretary of War, Mr. H. L. Stimson, the Secretary of the Navy, Colonel F. Knox, and others. President Roosevelt signed a bill asserting that the national -interest is imperilled and authorising the retention of selectees of national guardsmen, reservists and regular army men for 18 months beyond their regular terms of service.
