ABANDONED FARMS
REGROUPING BLAMED LEASEHOLD PROPERTIES (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. While the regrouping of leasehold area by the Lands Department was justified in many cases, it was contended by Mr. T. D. Burnett (Nat., Temulca) when discussing the Lands Department estimates in the House of Representatives yesterday that this process had been overdone and had produced the tragedy of abandoned homesteads. They were unoccupied and the State was put to the expense, either of removal or of providing some oversight of the buildings. He suggested that these farms should be re-conditioned and made suitable for occupation, even though only a peppercorn rent could be charged. The maintenance of production was important. In one district alone there were 18 homesteads abandoned through this re-grouping process. No matter how much was expected from our secondary industries, concluded Mr. Burnett, the main source of the country’s progress for many years to come would be from land settlement. The acting-Minister of Lands, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, did not comment on Mr. Burnett’s suggestion.
