CATTLE STOPS

DANGER TO PUBLIC FARMERS’ LIABILITY An opinion to the effect that cattle stops of the grill type might constitute a danger to the public and might involve a liability to the owners was forwarded to yesterday’s meeting of the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, the opinion being that of the solicitor to the national union. A North Taranaki remit to the recent conference, on the possible liability of owners for damages in respect of stock or personal damage caused by the grills, was submitted to the union’s solicitor, who in a lengthy review of the whole circumstances governing the construction of cattle stops, pointed out the - possibility of persons or stock being injured by accidental involvement with the grills. •The solicitor was, however, unable to give a definite ruling as to the liability of the individual propertyowners on whose land the grills were erected. The provisional executive discussed the matter briefly, and concluded that some risk attached to the use of grilled cattle stops, and that this risk must be borne by the individual property-owner.
