AFTER-WAR CONTROL
MARKETING OF WOOL EMPIRE ORGANISATION PRELIMINARY TALKS The likelihood that Empire countries might be able to work in concert after the war to control the disposal of wool, and dictate the price to the manufacturers, was discussed in a lengthy letter received by the Poverty Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union at its meeting yesterday from the Primary Producers’ Association in Perth, Western Australia. The letter stated that correspondence had been entered into before the war between Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, but that the commandeer had interrupted the preliminary moves. The necessity of having some organisation ready for the post-war years was emphasised in the letter, which urged that wool-growers,should break down barriers between the Dominions in order that their interests as producers should receive their due consideration. The meeting deferred discussion on the proposals until next meeting, by which time, it was suggested by the president, Mr. J. E. Benson, the executive of the union in Wellington would be able to give the branches a lead. Mr. E. U, Richardson suggested that the reconstruction of B.A.W.R.A. (the British-Australian Wool Realisation Association) would meet the needs of the farmer after the commandeer was suspended. Following the last war, this organisation had carried out the .sale of held-over wool stocks in Government hands, and to very good purpose so far as the farmers were concerned. The work of B.A.W.R.A. was warmly commended by other speakers, and the setting-up of a similar authority at the close of this war was generally supported.
