National Council of Women

An extraordinary meeting of the Gisborne branch of the National Council of Women was held recently in. the committee room at the Gisborne Women’s Club to study the remits to be submitted at the annual Donmion conference of the council, whi h takes place in Wanganui next monih. Mrs. E. Goffe presided over a good attendance. The opportunity was taken also to discuss a letter" received from Mr. Rhodes, commissioner of public service in regard to the staffing of nurses for mental hospitals. Afternoon tea was served at the close of the meeting.^

Tauranga. • 93rcl Birthday For (JO years Mrs. Annie Chappell, Grey Lynn, Auckland, has lived in New Zealand, and this week she attained her ninety-third birthday. Born in Cork. Ireland, Mrs. Chappell, whose maiden name was Hawkes, came to New Zealand in 1881 in the sailing ship Allumbagh. She landed at Auckland, and shortly afterwards went to Thames, where she married Mr. Francis Chappell, a well-known pioneer carpenter in that district. Mr. Chappell died before the Great War. Australian Actress The Australian actress, Miss Betty Bryant, .star of the film “Forty Thousand Horsemen,” who was married in Sydney last week to Mr. Morris Silverstein, of Singapore, general manager of the Oriental subsidiary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Film Corporation, has arrived at Auckland with her husband. Mr. and Mrs. Silverstein left by the California Clipper for Honolulu. After a snort holidav there they will go on to the United States. They expect to return to their home in Singapore in a few months. Farewell Bridge Tea On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. H. S. Irvine, who is being entertained by her friends prior to returning to Wellington after residing for several years in Gisborne, was the chief guest at a delightful bridge tea given by Mr. IT. R. Kendon at her home in Whitaker street. Gav with shaded Iceland poppies, the drawing-room offered a pleasant contrast to the wintry conditions outside, and in the dining-room, where tea was served, a Toig bowl of mixed spring flowers decorated the table. The hostess wore a graceful frock of navy blue wool crepe-de-chine cut on simple lines. Mrs Irvine was wearing a smartly tailored navy blue suit, with a hat to match, and furs. Informal Party Recently Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Gordon, gave a jolly party at their home in Collins street, for their son, Driver R. Gordon, who has since returned to Trentham military camp. Decorations of jonquils and marigolds created a happy atmosphere, and monopoly, five-hundred and euchre provided entertainment. The opportunity was taken by Mr. Gordon, on behalf of himself and family, of presenting a watch to his son, Driver Gordon, who was treated with musical honours. A delicious supper was served. The hostess was wearing a smartly cut London tan wool suit. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. W. Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. G. Callum. Mr. and Mrs. R. Nolan; Mesdames D. Gordon, sen., R. Lowe, and Mclntyre (Nuhaka); Misses P. Tuck, M. Porter. P. Cranswick, and H. Nightingale; Messrs. D. Flow Chow and R. A. Gordon. Women’s National Reserve On Tuesday afternoon Mrs. W. E. Goffe presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Women’s National Reserve held in the Parish Hall. Derby street. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Buckland in her recent bereavement. It was decided to postpone the jumble sale for August 15, until October. A letter was read from Mr. Rhodes, public service commissioner, dealing with the question of staffing in mental hospitals. A' communication also was received from Mr. P. C. Dwyer, district Public Trustee, in regard to the bequest of the late Mr. 'H. J. Bushnell. An interesting souvenir of the Berlin Olympic Games, 1936, in the form of a torch holder, received by Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Bruce from their son. Gunner S. Bruce, who took part in the Greek campaign, was displayed to the members by Mrs. Bruce, to whom a warm vote of thanks for her kind thought, was accorded. At the close of the meeting the members adjourned to “The Burlington” for afternoon tea. Poverty Bay Gardening Circle Final arrangements for the spring ilower show, which the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle is conducting in Messrs. Petties’ display room on Friday, September 5, for the benefit of the soldiers’ rehabilitation fund, were made at the monthly meeting of the circle held in Le Grand Cafe on Thursday afternoon. The proceeds of last year’s very successful display were devoted to the same worthy cause, and the promoters again hope for a generous measure of public support. There was a good attendance of' members and business was deait with under the direction of Mrs. E. Woodrow. An interesting paper on the work necessary in the garden for the month was read by Mrs. H. Brown. A report on the activities of the Poverty Bay Women’s Central Representative Committee was submitted by Mrs. FI. R.
