GISBORNE SOCCER

MERCANTILE’S BIG WIN Although Mercantile defeated Thistle easily by five goals to nil in the Gisborne Football Association’s competitions on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday, the game was keen up to Mercantile’s first score. Mercantile were at full strength, while Thistle were short of some of their best men, who, however, performed very encouragingly. The score at the interval was three—nil, and in the second half Mercantile kept up the pressure, but because of the splendid game played by the Thistle goalkeeper the second half score was kept down to two goals. On several occasions Thistle took play into the Mercantile sector and J. Watt came very near to scoring. Huxtable, home on leave, turned out on the Thistle left wing. Mr. Waugh was the referee.
