RAILWAY CROSSING
GREY STREET SEALING AVOIDANCE OF HAZARDS The early sealing of the Grey street railway crossing was urged at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, when it was suggested also that steps should be taken to avoid hazards caused by the main line running closer to the New Zealand Shipping Company’s store. Mr. R. Morse said that the crossing was now almost completed, and only one set of rails was to be finished. This should be done within a fortnight, he understood. At present the crossing was in a “pretty bad way,” and he urged that the council should not delay in completing the job by bituminising the section outside the lines. This work was already authorised. The borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, said that the Railways Department was responsible for the road to a width of 18in. outside the lines. An instruction was given to the engineer to have the work put in hand at the earliest possible date. Mr. Morse said he understood that there would be an automatic warning device at the crossing, which would be more dangerous when completed, particularly for traffic approaching the crossing from town, because the main line ran closer to the Shipping Company’s store. He urged that traffic from the direction of the town should be diverted as close to the eastern side of the crossing as possible to avoid the hazards.
