DAMAGE IN RESERVES
“WANTON DESTRUCTION” CYCLISTS IN GARDENS The “wanton destruction” of trees on Barry Park was reported to the Gisborne Borough Council last night by the works committee. “The supervising gardener reported that 12 trees in Barry Park have been damaged to such an extent as to require replacing and also that flower beds in the Botanical Gardens had been damaged by cyclists,” stated the committee. “This occurs after the reserves staff have ceased work for the day, and at week-ends. “Your committee recommends that full publicity be given to this wanton destruction, and the traffic inspector instructed to periodically visit Barry Park in an endeavour to trace offenders; also that cycling be prohibited in the Botanical Gardens.” The reserves committee reported that following an inspection of Kaiti Hill Park it was found that a number of fine native trees were overcrowded by accacias, the result being that the beauty of the native trees was spoilt by their growing out of siape. The committee recommended the removal of such accacias and any other trees not deemed necessary, the timber to be reserved for tree guards, and where it was considered advisable to replace any trees, native trees to be planted for preference, the matter of removals and replacements to be left in the hands of a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Morse and Singer, together with the supervising gardener. "The committee desires to express its appreciation of the well-stocked tree nursery established in the park, which reflects credit on the reserves staff responsible,” the report added. The reports were adopted.
