RACECOURSE BLAZE
GRANDSTAND RAZED WAIPUKURAU’S LOSS (Per Press Association.) WAIPUKURAU, this day. Fire destroyed the grandstand at the Waipukurau racecourse early this morning. The outbreak occurred at 1 a.m., and by 1.30 the stand had been reduced to wreckage. Although the fire brigade was promptly oh the scene, efforts to subdue the blaze were greatly hampered by a lack of water. Nothing was saved. This is tiie third occasion in the last two years on which a fire lias occurred at the racecourse, and in each case the outbreak has coincided with a period preceding a race meeting. At Christmas, 1939, the totalisator house was destroyed two days before a meeting, and the following Easter a minor fire broke out in a cloakroom. The grandstand was a large structure which -had been modernised at various times, and its loss,,will be an unfortunate blow for the Waipukurau Racing Club., . , „ ,
