INSPECTION ORDERED
PRIVATE WATER METERS NUMBER UNRELIABLE The Gisborne Borough Council last night decided to have private water meters in the town inspected and checked. This decision followed a report from the borough engineer, Mr. E. R Thomas, who maintained that several of the meters were unreliable. ‘There are many privately-owned water meters in the borough which do not receive regular maintenance,” the engineer’s report stated, "and a number are now in such condition as to be unreliable for measuring the flow of water.
“Assessing the water used by large consumers is not satisfactory, and the meters which are out of order should be repaired or renewed. In some local authorities privately-owned meters arc maintained by the council, while in others owners pay the cost of maintenance or replacements. "I desire to know what method is lo be adopted in putting these meters in order. As §ome of the meters referred to are up to 2in. in size replacement of defective parts or renewing can be a rather costly matter.”
