FINEST OF AMENITIES

WAIKANAE PARK BOROUGH COUNCIL VIEW ‘‘There is no doubt that this is one of the finest amenities we have in the borough,” reported the inspection committee to the meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council last night, when commenting on the splendid appearance of the Waikanae Park. This comment was made following an inspection of the park and also of the Marine drive. A request had been made by the Marine Drive ConVmittec to plant loiloi grass on portions of the seaward side of the drive. This proposal was not favoured by the committee, however, for in time the bushes would become very unsightly and, owing lo their denseness, provide harbour for vermin. The planting of marram grass was recommended by the inspection committee instead of toitoi, marram grass being used extensively in other parts for holding sand. Reporting on the progress of the plantations made along the Marine drive, the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, stated that the planting of pohutukawas and construction of guards between Grey street and Stanley road bad been completed and the erection of a protection fence around the Stanley road island before planting was being undertaken. Planting of Moreton Bay figs on both sides of Stanley road was being carried out this week.
