“MATTER OF URGENCY”

PARK LOOSE BOXES HEALTH CAMP SITE COUNCIL DEFERS ACTION The prospect of removing the loose boxes on the Park Domain at an early date, in order to comply with the wishes of the Health Department, which desired to have the boxes out of the way before the commencement of the health camp building, was disc'.used by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. The council agreed to secure a report from the borough engineer, Mr. E. R. Thomas, and to discuss the matter again at the next meeting At a previous meeting the council agreed that it could not accept responsibility for the removal of the loose boxes, but the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., stated last night that he was informed the health camp committee did not have the funds to carry out the work. The national committee was supplying £6IOO for the building and £6OO for furniture, and no other money would be available. He said that he had given further consideration to the proposal and thought that the council might secure an employment subsidy, if only labour was required. It was pointed out, however, that a certain amount of transport and perhaps repairs to the loose boxes might be required, in addition to the labour. Mr. H. H. De Costa said that the removal of the loose boxes had become a matter of urgency. The Mayor said lie understood that the tender of Mr. George Smith had been accepted at £6IOO for the erection of the health camp building. Mr. J. H. Hall said he understood that an estimate had been secured for the removal of the loose boxes, and that was £230. Dr. A. L. Singer suggested that the health camp committee should organise a working bee to effect the removal. Mr. De Costa: Nobody seems to know where they arc to be moved to. Further consideration of the matter was deferred, and in the meantime the engineer was asked to submit a report.
