No Accommodation At Christchurch For Tourist Parties

CHRISTCHURCH. This Day (P.A.)—lnsufficient hotel accommodation for tourists parties during the coming season will mean a loss to Christchurch of thousands of pounds. Because of the impossibility of fitting travellers in, the organisers of several tours have had to cut out Christchurch altogether from the itineraries. Six parties of overseas tourists, who would be coming to New Zealand during the summer under arrangements made by the tourist Department, would not be able to stay in Christchurch because of the shortage of hotel accommodation during the centennial period, said the district manager of the department (Mr W. A. Pickford) today. The parties who could not be handled in Christchurch would all be coming from Australia, said Mr Pickford. One was a bowling party with 42 members. This group would now have to stay at Hanmer from March 11 to March 14. Accommodation also could not oe secured for a party of 21 South Australian farmers who would go to Ashburton. Four other parties scheduled to pass through during November, February and early March had also to reconcile themselves to the fact that they would not be staying m Christchurch.
